Phone risk data includes the following information for billing and/or shipping phone numbers:
- The country associated with the phone number,
- whether the phone number is a VoIP,
- the original network operator for the phone number,
- and whether the phone number is a mobile phone number or a fixed number.
These data points will only be returned when you pass phone number inputs to the minFraud Insights and Factors web services. Learn more about passing inputs to minFraud.
If you're using phone risk data for manual review, and you use the minFraud Factors service, you may also find it helpful to consult the phone number risk factor scores to give you a better picture of the transaction. Learn more about phone number risk scores.
Phone number country code
This is the two-character ISO 3166-1 country code for the country associated with the phone number, ie. US, CA, FR. Learn more about ISO 3166-1 country codes.
This is a helpful value to compare with the country as indicated by the IP address, as a mismatch between these values could be an indicator of fraud.
You can read the API specifications for the phone country code on our developer portal:
VoIP phone number
A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone uses an internet connection to make/receive calls. This value will be true if the phone number is a VoIP number allocated by a regulator. The value is false if the shipping phone number is not a VoIP number allocated by a regulator.
The key is only present when a valid shipping phone number has been provided and we have data for it.
A VoIP phone number may be more likely to be associated with fraudulent activity.
You can read the API specifications for the VoIP determination on our developer portal:
The original network operator
This field is the name of the original network operator associated with the phone number. It does not reflect if phone numbers have been ported from the original operator to another, nor does it identify mobile virtual network operators.
Another strong signal for fraud is a phone carrier that does not operate in the country indicated by the IP address.
You can read the API specifications for the original network operator on our developer portal:
Phone number type
This field indicates whether the phone number is mobile (cellular) or fixed (landline). It can be helpful information to have together with other data points when manually reviewing an order to determine whether or not it’s fraudulent.
