The risk factor scores are all taken into account when the overall risk score is calculated. These scores break down the overall risk score into the risk of the transaction when specific pieces of transaction data are isolated and analyzed independently. In most cases, looking at the individual risk factor scores will tell you what elements of a transaction are elevating the overall risk score. The IP risk score is returned in all minFraud services, but all other risk factors scores are exclusive to the minFraud Factors service. Learn more about the differences between the minFraud services.
The overall risk score will usually be higher or lower than the risk factor scores, because all of the transaction data taken together will increase or decrease our confidence that the transaction is risky. For example, if the IP risk factor score was high because the person conducting the transaction was using a VPN or other anonymizing proxy, the overall risk score might be lower because the email address had a good reputation across the minFraud network, and the billing address and shipping address seemed to indicate an legitimate transaction.

Scoring for the risk factor scores
All risk factor scores are given as a percentage ranging from 0.01 to 99. For example, a shipping address risk score of 84.30 means that the transaction has a 84.3% chance of being fraudulent when the shipping address is considered on its own. This would likely mean that we have seen significant fraudulent activity for orders shipped to this address from your store or from across the minFraud network.
The minFraud Factors service can only return scores related to the specific transaction data you pass. For example, if you are not passing an email address, the minFraud Factors service will not be able to return email risk scores. Learn more about passing inputs to minFraud.
Even when you pass the relevant inputs, a risk factor score may not be returned. Risk factor scores will be returned when we are able to detect a pattern in the inputs that influence our risk assessment for the transaction. If we do not detect any patterns that would influence our risk assessment for a particular set of inputs, then risk factor scores for those inputs will not be returned.
Reviewing the risk factor scores can be helpful in understanding the overall risk score and can help you target your approach to manual review, or fine-tune your own risk models based on the risk factors that are most important to your business.
